Cotton harvesting, known locally as "white gold," continues in the Matcha district of Tajikistan's Sughd region, according to the regional administration's press service.
Sughd Region Chairman Rajab Akhmadzoda attended the first harvest ceremony at the Sangin Kudus farm in the village of Buston. The farm has 30 hectares of farmland, 25 of which are devoted to cotton.
In a conversation with farm managers and veterans, Rajab Akhmadzoda emphasized the importance of cotton as a raw material for processing and manufacturing textile and clothing products. He explained that timely harvesting ensures a stable supply of raw materials for these enterprises.
Farmers at the Sangin Kudus farm reported that this year's harvest was significantly higher than last year's. This is due to the use of the Juntai and EF-52 cotton varieties, which were adapted to the region's climate. Sowing was done under plastic film, which, according to experts, is more effective than traditional sowing.
According to the district's agricultural department, 5,400 cotton farms in the Matchinsky district planted 10,280 hectares of cotton in 2024. To date, over 500 tons of the crop have been harvested. The planned harvest is over 31,000 tons.
There are ten cotton collection and processing facilities in the district. During his working visit, the regional governor inspected several of them and instructed district and agricultural sector leaders to strengthen cooperation with farmers, ensure timely collection and harvesting of the harvest, and promote the development of domestic textile production.
