US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States is "ready and committed to doing everything possible" to help end the war in Ukraine. He made this statement on May 26, commenting on a telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Rubio's words were published on the website of the US State Department.
Answering journalists' questions, the US Secretary of State reported that Lavrov had stated that the upcoming strikes would make Kyiv "a very dangerous place." Rubio noted that the Russian side had sent a corresponding message to all diplomatic missions in the Ukrainian capital.
According to the US Secretary of State, "obviously Putin wanted" Lavrov to convey this information "directly to President" Donald Trump.
"I said that there are no active or planned negotiations with Ukraine at this time, but the United States is always ready to play a constructive and helpful role if such an opportunity arises," Rubio said.
The US Secretary of State also commented on the Russian attack on Kyiv on the night of May 24.
"Every time you see these major strikes from one side or another, it's a reminder of why this is a terrible war, one that's lasted longer than World War II, and why it must end. The United States is ready and willing to do everything possible to help end this war. I hope that at some point, the opportunity arises for us to play that role again," Rubio said.
On the evening of May 25, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Lavrov had a telephone conversation with Rubio at the direction of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
During the conversation, the Russian minister stated that the Russian army “is launching systematic and consistent strikes against facilities located in Kyiv that serve the needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and against the centers where the relevant decisions are made.”
Lavrov also "drew attention" to the Russian Foreign Ministry's statement that the United States and other countries with missions in Kyiv "are advised to ensure the evacuation of their diplomatic personnel and other citizens from the Ukrainian capital."
In response, EU Ambassador to Ukraine Kateryna Mathernova stated that the EU "is not going anywhere." "We remain in Kyiv. We remain with Ukraine," she emphasized.
The Polish Foreign Ministry also stated that any attacks on the country's diplomatic missions will be perceived as "deliberate and intentional."
