On October 20, Tajikistan's Minister of Transport, Azim Ibrohim, met with a World Bank expert group visiting the country as part of its latest mission, the Ministry of Transport's press service reported .
The delegation was led by Abdul Hamid Khalili, Team Leader of the "Improvement of Regional Transport Links in Central Asia (URPCR-4)" project. The meeting was attended by transport safety and environmental specialists, representatives of the project implementation team at the Ministry of Transport, and a World Bank Country Assistant in Tajikistan.
During the event, the parties discussed the current status of the project. Construction work on road sections in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) is reported to be 95% complete and nearing completion. In the Sughd Region, completion has reached 85.85%, and work is continuing as planned.
The meeting focused on the reconstruction of certain road sections in the Sughd region, the construction of bridges in GBAO, the implementation of a road asset management system (RAMS), increasing the use of seat belts, and the development of a National Road Safety Strategy for the Republic of Tajikistan for 2025–2035.
The Minister of Transport also asked the bank's representatives to assist in carrying out additional work using the savings. Specifically, this included the reconstruction of 9.2 km of the Khistevarz-Sakhilob road in the Sughd region, the 1.36 km-long Barsem-Tang section, and the construction of a new road to the Tem mahalla in GBAO (0.9 km).
On behalf of the World Bank, Abdul Hamid Khalili expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Transport for its cooperation and confirmed the bank's readiness to expand cooperation in the field of transport, construction, and reconstruction of the country's roads.
As part of the current mission, which will last from October 20 to 24, the bank's experts plan to hold meetings with the Ministry of Transport's project implementation team, representatives of the consulting firms Corporate Solution Consulting Ltd (UK), Finnok/Sirway (Finland), EASST Expertise LTD (UK), FRED Engineering SRL (Italy), as well as with the State Automobile Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tatarstan.
From October 17 to 19, World Bank representatives visited construction sites in the Sughd region to review the progress of the work. During the visit, training sessions on road construction and reconstruction safety will also be held.
The implementation of the "URPSCA-4" project is aimed at improving the transport infrastructure of Central Asia, increasing traffic safety, developing regional connections, and attracting investment in the construction and modernization of roads.
