The Republic of Tajikistan ranked 87th in the updated Henley Passport Index 2025, which is published annually by the British consulting company Henley & Partners and evaluates the strength of passports based on the number of countries they can enter visa-free or with simplified visas.
According to the report, Tajik citizens can travel visa-free or obtain a visa on arrival to 55 countries. This is one of the lowest rates among Central Asian countries; only Turkmenistan, ranked 93rd, has access to 48 countries.
Kazakhstan leads the region in passport strength, with citizens able to travel visa-free to 78 countries—ranking 67th in the global ranking. It is followed by Kyrgyzstan (81st, 62 countries), Uzbekistan (82nd, 61 countries), Tajikistan (87th, 55 countries), and Turkmenistan (93rd, 48 countries).
Globally, Singapore, Japan, France, Germany, and Italy top the rankings. Passport holders from these countries can travel to nearly 200 countries visa-free or with simplified visa procedures.
At the bottom of the list was Afghanistan, whose citizens can visit only 24 countries without a visa.
The Henley Passport Index is one of the most authoritative indicators in the field of international mobility. The ranking is based on official data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and covers 199 passports and 227 destinations. The index is updated quarterly and reflects the dynamics of visa agreements between countries.
It is noted that in recent years, Tajikistan has been gradually expanding the geography of visa-free travel, particularly through agreements with countries in the Middle East and Asia. In 2025, a visa-free regime was introduced for diplomatic passport holders between Tajikistan and Italy, and agreements were signed to develop air travel with several Persian Gulf countries.
Henley & Partners experts emphasize that the index reflects not only a country's diplomatic capabilities but also the degree of trust in its citizens by the international community, which is directly linked to economic, political, and migration stability.
