In Tajikistan, for the first time, a patient with a pancreatic cyst underwent an incision-free, oral endoscopic cystogastrostomy. This was reported by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Republic of Tajikistan.
A new intervention for the country was successfully performed at the State Institution “Republican Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery”.
For the first time in Tajikistan, the center's specialists performed an endoscopic cystogastrostomy on a 22-year-old patient with a pancreatic cyst—without an incision, through the mouth.
The operation was performed by the head of the diagnostics and treatment department of the Republican Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery, candidate of medical sciences Sorbon Sheralievich Musoev, together with the institution’s ultrasound diagnostics doctor Zumrad Mukhammadieva.
According to Sorbon Sheralievich Musoev, during the examination, the patient was diagnosed with a pancreatic cyst measuring 17 x 9 cm. The cyst was putting pressure on the posterior wall of the stomach, causing pain, nausea, and vomiting, and also obstructing the passage of food into the duodenum.

"To address the identified issues, the patient underwent a puncture and catheterization of the cyst through the posterior wall of the stomach under endoscopic guidance, as well as an endoscopic cystography—the injection of a contrast agent into the cyst cavity. A plastic pigtail stent, 11 cm long and 10 Fr in diameter, was inserted into the cyst cavity, measuring 17 x 9 cm. Clear liquid secretions began to drain through the stent under pressure into the stomach," he noted.
According to the specialist, the cystogastrostomy was performed endoscopically under ultrasound and X-ray guidance. A follow-up ultrasound examination of the abdominal organs 24 hours after the surgery revealed a reduction in the cyst size to 4 cm, after which the patient was discharged home.
Previously, treatment of such patients was carried out using open surgery with an incision, which was accompanied by trauma to the body and increased treatment and recovery times.
Endoscopic cystogastrostomy is an endoscopic procedure in which an anastomosis (drainage) is created between a pancreatic cyst and the back wall of the stomach to drain its contents without an incision.
It is noted that thanks to the new surgical method, patients can undergo treatment without an incision and be discharged home within 24 hours after surgery.
The Ministry of Health emphasized that this achievement demonstrates the creation of the necessary conditions in the country for performing complex surgical interventions and the use of modern diagnostic and treatment methods.
