Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the head of the Presidential Office, Andriy Yermak, has submitted his resignation. He announced this in his evening address, clarifying that the decision to dismiss him had been made.
During his five years in this position, Yermak rose from presidential aide to one of the most influential figures in Ukrainian politics. He was often referred to as the country's "grey cardinal" and even "vice president," emphasizing the extent of his influence.
"I want no one to have any questions for Ukraine. Therefore, today are the following internal decisions. First, the Office of the President of Ukraine will be rebooted. The head of the Office, Andriy Yermak, has submitted his resignation," Zelenskyy stated. He added that consultations on the selection of a new head of the Office will take place on Saturday.
Yermak's resignation occurred amid a high-profile corruption scandal. On the morning of November 28, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine searched his apartment. Yermak noted that he "provided full cooperation" to detectives and granted them "full access to the apartment."
The search and dismissal followed events that followed two weeks after the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) announced the uncovering of a "high-level criminal organization" operating in the energy sector. According to the bureau, its alleged leader is businessman Timur Mindich.
Yermak himself has not yet made any public comments regarding his decision.
