FIFA's leadership has requested more detailed information from Mexican authorities regarding security measures in Guadalajara (Jalisco) and Monterrey (Nuevo León). These cities will host World Cup matches in June, as well as playoff matches from March 26 to 31, Interfax reports.
According to the EFE agency, FIFA expressed concern about the increase in violence, particularly in Guadalajara, following the death of drug lord and leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus, and Nuevo León Governor Samuel García stated that the safety of both the tournament participants and fans is guaranteed.
Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized at a briefing on Tuesday: "Absolutely all security guarantees are in place. There are no risks."
Jalisco's governor said schools in Guadalajara, which were closed Monday and Tuesday for safety reasons, will reopen on Wednesday.
The Governor of Nuevo León announced the implementation of a strategy under the slogan "Bring New Things, Bring the World Cup," aimed at strengthening the state's infrastructure and presenting it to the international community. He stated that the region has a unique opportunity to leave a legacy for Nuevo León and showcase the state's potential during the World Cup.
