Hamas has announced its readiness to release all Israeli hostages in the Gaza Strip, concurrent with the complete withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from the enclave. An unnamed Hamas official told Al Jazeera on Tuesday.
"The Hamas delegation demanded that the release of Israeli hostages be linked to the withdrawal of Israeli troops. The release of the last hostage must coincide with the withdrawal of the last occupation forces," the movement's representative noted.
The second day of Gaza ceasefire talks, taking place in Egypt, focused on developing maps for the IDF's withdrawal from the enclave and a timetable for the release of hostages. During the discussions, the Hamas delegation also emphasized the need for the international community to provide security guarantees for a ceasefire in the region.
It was previously reported that the first day of indirect talks between Israel and Hamas, which began yesterday in Sharm el-Sheikh, was successful. An unnamed Egyptian official told the Associated Press that the parties had agreed on a significant portion of the terms of the first phase of the peace plan proposed by former US President Donald Trump. Specifically, this concerns a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
As a reminder, on September 30, Donald Trump presented a 20-point plan for a settlement in Gaza, including a cessation of hostilities and the release of Israeli hostages. The plan received the support of leading regional countries, including Egypt and Qatar. Israel and Hamas agreed to the proposed terms.
