Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Ottawa's intention to recognize the state of Palestine at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, which will take place in September. The corresponding statement was published on the official website of the head of government, Interfax reports.
As noted in the document, the decision is linked to the Palestinian National Authority's commitment to reforms, including holding general elections in 2026 without the participation of the Hamas movement, as well as the demilitarization of the future state.
Carney also called for the immediate release of the hostages taken by Hamas on October 7, 2023, stressing that the movement should not participate in the governance of Palestine.
The day before, the British and French authorities made similar statements. Paris expressed its readiness to recognize Palestine in September, London – on condition of progress in humanitarian and political settlement. Berlin emphasized that recognition is possible only after a ceasefire in Gaza.
