On June 16, US President Donald Trump abruptly interrupted his participation in the G7 summit, which was held in Kananaskis, Canada. The reason was the sharp increase in tensions in the Middle East and the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran, which required the immediate return of the head of the White House to Washington for emergency consultations and operational decisions.
The White House press service reported that despite a productive day at the summit, where Trump signed a major trade deal with British Prime Minister Keira Starmer, developments in the region forced the president to cancel the rest of his events and leave Canada on the evening of June 16, immediately after an official dinner with the leaders of the G7 countries.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said in a post on the social network X that the decision to leave was dictated solely by the need to devote maximum attention to the crisis situation in the Middle East.
An hour before Leavitt's official statement, Trump posted an alarming post on his social network Truth Social, in which he emphasized that "Iran should not have nuclear weapons" and called for "a complete evacuation of all people from Tehran." These words reflect the seriousness and tension of the developing situation in the region.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urgently flew to Washington with the president. An emergency national security council was convened at the White House, which is being held in the Situation Room, a specialized complex for working in crisis situations. Thanks to the equipment in this room, the president and his advisers have the opportunity to monitor the situation in real time, make decisions and coordinate the actions of the military and intelligence agencies around the world.
On the sidelines of the summit, Trump also held a 20-minute meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to discuss the ongoing military escalation in the Middle East. The leaders agreed on the urgent need to find ways to de-escalate the conflict and stop Iran's nuclear program, which is causing serious international concern.
The second day of the summit was scheduled for Trump with a number of important meetings with the presidents of Mexico and Ukraine, Claudia Sheinbaum and Volodymyr Zelensky. However, due to his sudden departure, these talks will most likely not take place.
French President Emmanuel Macron called Trump's decision to leave the summit "positive news" in a comment to the press, stressing that this will allow the head of the White House to focus on efforts to achieve a ceasefire and stabilize the situation in the Middle East.
Donald Trump's emergency departure from the G7 summit was thus a clear reflection of the growing tensions in international politics and evidence of how seriously the United States takes the situation in the Middle East at the moment.
