US President Donald Trump has called on several Islamic countries to join the Abraham Accords and normalize relations with Israel if an agreement is reached between Washington and Iran.
According to Axios, citing informed sources, during a meeting with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Bahrain, Trump stated that after the war with Iran ends, he expects those countries that do not yet have peace agreements with Israel to join the agreements.
According to sources, the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Pakistan, which do not have official diplomatic relations with Israel, were surprised by the American president's request.
The publication notes that, according to US and Israeli officials, Riyadh will not take steps to normalize relations with Israel before the Israeli elections scheduled for September.
As Axios points out, Saudi Arabian authorities continue to demand that Israel accept irreversible and time-bound commitments to establish a Palestinian state as a condition for normalizing relations. The Israeli government opposes this.
The Abraham Accords were brokered by the United States during Donald Trump's first term in 2020 between Israel and three Arab countries—Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Morocco.
The agreements provide for the establishment of diplomatic relations, the opening of embassies, as well as cooperation in the economy and other areas.
Earlier, Fox News, citing an American official, reported that the framework agreement between Washington and Tehran was 95% approved by both parties.
At the same time, the parties continue to discuss the wording regarding the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear arsenal.
