A meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz took place on Wednesday at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing. Xi Jinping stated that China-Germany relations not only concern the interests of both countries but also have a significant impact on Europe and the world. According to Xi Jinping, the more turbulent the world becomes, the more pressing the development of a China-Germany comprehensive strategic partnership becomes. To this end, Xi Jinping put forward three proposals.
First, China and Germany should become reliable, mutually supportive partners. China remains willing to share development opportunities with all countries and looks forward to Germany's objective approach to China's development. Second, the two sides should cooperate on innovation based on openness and mutual benefit. The development strategies of China and Germany are highly coordinated, and the two countries can engage in dialogue and cooperation in artificial intelligence and other advanced fields. Third, the two countries need to strengthen inter-civilizational exchanges and people-to-people contacts, as well as strengthen people-to-people friendship. Xi Jinping emphasized that, amid global changes unseen in a century, China and Germany should jointly uphold the leading role of the UN, uphold multilateralism, the international legal order, free trade, and the principles of solidarity and cooperation. According to Xi Jinping, China supports Europe's independence and looks forward to further developing relations with Europe. For his part, Merz stated that Berlin attaches great importance to relations with Beijing, firmly adheres to the one-China principle, and is ready to continue the traditional friendship with China and continuously deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. According to the Chancellor, German companies highly value the Chinese market and hope for deeper cooperation with China. Merz emphasized that Germany opposes protectionism and supports dialogue and cooperation between China and Europe. The two leaders also exchanged views on the Ukrainian crisis.
