Paleontologists from St. Petersburg State University have discovered a fragment of a duck-billed dinosaur skull in Tajikistan. This was reported by the St. Petersburg State University press service.
According to scientists, such finds in the region are extremely rare. The researchers note that the specimen is uniquely preserved, which will allow them to more accurately determine its affiliation with a specific group of ancient reptiles.
"The bone's preservation is almost perfect. This allows us to conduct a detailed study and, possibly, describe a new genus of dinosaur," the research team reported.
Experts are currently conducting a comprehensive analysis of the find, comparing it with collections from paleontological museums in other countries. The results of the study could be an important contribution to the study of the ancient fauna of Central Asia and shed light on the evolution of duck-billed dinosaurs in the region.
The university emphasized that the discovery of such remains in Tajikistan confirms that the country's territory could have been home to diverse dinosaur species during the Mesozoic era, including herbivorous representatives of the hadrosaurid family.
It was previously reported that St. Petersburg scientists are also working on developing a system for diagnosing the consequences of coronavirus infection.
