The US Treasury Department is developing a design for a new $250 bill featuring President Donald Trump and is awaiting Congress's approval to amend current legislation. This was announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent at a White House briefing, Interfax reports.
According to Bessent, current regulations prohibit the use of portraits of living people on currency, but a bill is being considered on Capitol Hill that would provide an exception for the commemorative series for the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The document was introduced by Republican Congressman Joe Wilson and has been in the House Financial Services Committee since February 2025. Bessent emphasized that the Treasury Department is proactive but will remain strictly within the law.
A Wilson spokesperson told NBC News that the congressman discussed the bill's progress with Committee Chairman French Hill and received support from the Treasury Department and the White House. Republican Party sources noted that the document has received preliminary approval for hearings.
If the project is approved, the banknote will become part of a broader package of commemorative initiatives. In March, the department already announced the inclusion of Trump's signature on new series of paper money—a first for a sitting president.
