US President Donald Trump has harshly criticized Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev. In a post on the social network Truth Social, Trump called Medvedev a "failed former president" and advised him to "watch his words," warning that he is "entering dangerous territory."
Trump's statement came amid his initiatives to impose new import duties on goods from India. He noted that Washington "does almost no business with Russia," adding:
"I don't care what India does with Russia. They can destroy their dead economies together – that's their business. But tell Medvedev to watch his words. Because he is entering very dangerous territory."
Trump did not specify which statement by Medvedev caused such a sharp reaction.
Medvedev's response
Shortly after Trump's post, Dmitry Medvedev responded on his social network X (formerly Twitter) , calling the American leader's reaction "nervous" and assessing it as "confirmation of the correctness of Russia's course."
“If the words of the former Russian president provoke such a strong reaction from the head of the White House, it means we are doing everything right,” Medvedev said.
Responding to Trump's words about Russia's "dead economy," Medvedev mentioned the so-called "Dead Hand" – the Soviet system of automatic retaliatory nuclear strike, officially called "Perimeter."
“Let him remember his films about the ‘walking dead’ and how dangerous a ‘dead hand’ that doesn’t exist in nature can be,” Medvedev noted.
Background to the conflict
The conflict between Trump and Medvedev has escalated amid the Russian politician's recent comments regarding the US ultimatum on Ukraine. Trump had previously said that he was giving Russia 10 days to reach an agreement with Kiev, threatening to expand sanctions. Medvedev called this a "threat" and a "step toward war," and also insulted Trump and Senator Lindsey Graham, calling them "grandpas."
"It is not for you or Trump to dictate when to sit down at the negotiating table. Everything will end when we achieve all the goals of the military operation," Medvedev wrote.
