At least six people were killed and approximately 20 injured in a gas explosion and subsequent fire in the city of Shchuchinsk in Kazakhstan's Akmola region, the Akmola region's emergency department press service reported on Friday night.
According to the department, a gas explosion followed by a fire occurred in a one-story cafe attached to a five-story residential building in the city of Shchuchinsk, Burabay District. Emergency Department personnel arrived at the scene within five minutes of receiving the call.
Firefighters reportedly recovered eight gas cylinders from the burning building and rescued more than ten people. According to preliminary reports, approximately 20 people were injured and six were killed in the incident.
Later, a number of media outlets reported that seven people had died.
According to the Department of Emergency Situations, the fire has been completely extinguished, and rescuers are clearing the rubble. The cause and circumstances of the incident are being determined.
The press service also reported that five victims were transported by Ministry of Emergency Situations ambulances, accompanied by medical personnel, to the city of Kokshetau. Two more patients are scheduled for transport.
The victims were taken to the regional hospital, where they are receiving the necessary medical care. Their condition is under constant medical supervision.
