US President Donald Trump said he was dissatisfied with the way Cuban authorities are negotiating with the United States and said he might consider a "friendly takeover" of the island, Interfax reports.
"The Cuban authorities are negotiating with us, and as you know, they're in big trouble. They have no money, they have nothing right now… and perhaps we'll carry out a friendly conquest of Cuba," Trump told reporters before flying to Texas.
The President added that there are many people living in the United States who would like to return to Cuba.
It was previously reported that on Thursday night, Cuban naval border guards returned fire on a U.S. civilian boat that had entered Cuban territorial waters. On board were ten people armed with assault rifles and Molotov cocktails. All of them were Cubans residing in the United States.
As a result of the shootout, four people on the boat were killed and six were injured. One Cuban border guard was also wounded. All the injured were transported to Cuba, where they received medical treatment.
Following the operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Trump repeatedly stated that Cuba could be one of his next targets. The US president later signed an executive order declaring a national emergency due to the "threat" posed by Cuba, which authorizes tariffs on products from countries intending to sell or supply oil to Havana.
