During his address to the nation following the shooting in Washington that wounded two National Guard soldiers, US President Donald Trump promised to redouble the government's efforts to deport migrants, Interfax reports.
"We must now vet every alien who enters our country from Afghanistan under Biden, and we must take all necessary steps to ensure that any alien from any country who does not belong here is removed," Trump said in the address.
The American president confirmed media reports that the suspect in the shooting of National Guard soldiers arrived in the United States from Afghanistan, noting that he was "brought in by the Biden administration in September 2021."
Trump emphasized that the attack on the National Guard demonstrates that the main threat to US national security is that "the previous administration allowed 20 million unvetted and unknown foreigners to enter the country."
"This was a crime against our entire nation. This was a crime against humanity," the US president said.
The American leader also promised that the suspect would pay a "severe price."
It was previously reported that the shooting occurred at 2:15 PM (10:15 PM Moscow time) on Wednesday local time near the White House. Two US National Guard soldiers were seriously wounded in the attack.
Vice President J.D. Vance said authorities do not yet know the motive for the crime. Donald Trump announced that an additional 500 National Guard troops have been deployed to Washington.
