On the night of October 22, the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia were subjected to missile and drone attacks using Shahed unmanned aerial vehicles, resulting in destruction and civilian casualties, according to local military officials.
In the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, air defenses repelled attacks by Russian drones from early morning. According to Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, the aftermath of the strikes was recorded in several districts of the city.
A high-rise building caught fire in Kyiv's Dniprovskyi district. The fire has been contained, and all emergency services are on the scene. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, 10 people have been rescued, and one body has been recovered.
Additionally, a fire broke out after an explosion in the Holosiivskyi district, and in the Pecherskyi district, drone debris fell into the courtyard of a residential building, setting cars on fire. In the Darnytskyi district, the aftermath of the attacks was also recorded: a fire in a residential high-rise and a non-residential building. According to Tkachenko, as of 6:46 a.m., the death toll in Kyiv had reached two.
At the same time, Russian forces launched strikes in Zaporizhzhia. Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, reported that as of Friday morning, 13 people were injured in the overnight attack, including women between the ages of 21 and 62. The victims suffered shrapnel wounds and carbon monoxide poisoning.
British intelligence previously noted that Russia launched four massive attacks on Ukraine in September. The largest strike occurred on September 7, when over 800 air strike weapons were deployed. The simultaneous use of missiles and drones is aimed at overwhelming Ukraine's air defense systems.
Ukrainian authorities have called on the public to remain calm and follow the instructions of emergency services.
