At the Republican Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Republic of Tajikistan, a rare endovascular procedure was successfully performed to install a stent graft in the abdominal aorta of a 72-year-old patient from the Rasht district who suffered from an aneurysm.
According to the Ministry of Health press service, the surgery was performed using a closed technique—an X-ray endovascular approach—using modern angiographic equipment. The surgeons made a small puncture, eliminating the need for an open incision, which reduced the surgical trauma and shortened the recovery time.
According to specialists, this is the second case in the country where such a procedure has been performed using the endovascular method. After the stent graft was installed, the risk of aneurysm rupture was completely eliminated, allowing the patient to return to normal life. His condition is currently stable, he is active in his hospital room, and will be discharged home soon.
Previously, the center performed such operations using an open method, which required significant surgical intervention, an incision in the patient's body, and a long recovery period.
Jamshed Rakhmonov, the center's specialist who performed the surgery, explained that an aneurysm is a dilation or bulge in the wall of a blood vessel, caused by a weakening or thinning of the wall. Under blood pressure, part of the vessel expands, taking on the shape of a "tube" or "bubble." Aneurysms most often develop in the aorta, the body's main vessel, or in the vessels of the brain.
According to the specialist, the main danger of an aneurysm is the possibility of its rupture, which can lead to massive bleeding or stroke. The main causes of the condition include vascular narrowing due to fatty deposits, high blood pressure, trauma, and congenital weakness of connective tissue.
Diagnosis is made using ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), or angiography. Treatment depends on the size and location of the aneurysm: for small aneurysms, observation and pressure reduction are recommended, while for larger or more dangerous aneurysms, endovascular stent graft placement or open surgery are recommended.
Currently, the center performs all types of surgical treatment of aortic aneurysms using modern angiographic equipment acquired with the support of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan.
