Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon stated that Russia is one of Tajikistan's main political and economic partners. The head of state made this statement during expanded talks between the two countries' delegations in Dushanbe as part of Russian President Vladimir Putin's state visit, TASS reports.
"Russia is one of Tajikistan's main political and economic partners. We cooperate closely in trade, economic, cultural, humanitarian, and security areas. Many issues are addressed through the work of the intergovernmental commission," Emomali Rahmon emphasized.
The President of Tajikistan noted that the two countries have built trusting, allied relations based on mutual support, respect, and strategic partnership. He also expressed confidence that the Russian President's visit will give new impetus to the development of bilateral cooperation and open up additional opportunities for expanding collaboration in key areas.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's state visit to the Republic of Tajikistan is taking place on October 8–9. During the visit, the two leaders held official talks, and the Russian leader is scheduled to participate in the second Central Asia–Russia Summit and the CIS Heads of State Council meeting on October 10.
Relations between Tajikistan and Russia
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Russian Federation were established on April 8, 1992. During this period, the two countries signed more than 200 interstate and intergovernmental agreements, covering a wide range of areas—from economics and energy to culture, science, and security.
In September of this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a congratulatory message to Emomali Rahmon on the occasion of the 34th anniversary of Tajikistan's independence, noted the progressive development of the bilateral strategic partnership and alliance, emphasizing the high level of political trust and active interaction in the international arena.
According to the Federal Customs Service of Russia, Tajikistan's share of Russia's total foreign trade turnover is 0.2%. Russia remains one of Tajikistan's largest trading partners, accounting for over 20% of the country's foreign trade. According to the Tajik side, trade turnover between the two countries from January to August 2025 exceeded $1.4 billion, a 13% increase compared to the same period last year. By the end of 2024, mutual trade volume was approximately $1.9 billion, an increase of 15% compared to 2023.
In March 2025, following talks in the Kremlin, Presidents Vladimir Putin and Emomali Rahmon confirmed their intention to increase bilateral trade turnover by 2.5 times by 2030, emphasizing their commitment to intensifying industrial cooperation, developing transport and logistics ties, and expanding humanitarian programs.
