The official closing ceremony of the 3rd Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Games took place at the Ganja Stadium in Azerbaijan. The CIS Executive Committee press service reported this.
Speaking at the ceremony, Samir Sharifov, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the III CIS Games, noted that the competitions became a vibrant sporting event and brought together representatives from 13 countries.
"Athletes from eight CIS member states, as well as five invited countries, participated in the Games. Over the course of several days, they demonstrated their skill and perseverance in 23 sports, competing for 235 sets of individual and team medals. Millions of fans witnessed exciting competitions and unforgettable moments of joy and pride," Sharifov said.
He thanked all the athletes for their dedication, will to win, and the inspiration they provided to the spectators. He said the competition's results laid the foundation for future athletic achievements.
During the ceremony, the CIS flag was lowered to the sounds of the official Games song. This honorable mission was carried out by the winners of the III Games: Nihad Rahimov (sambo), Magsud Makhsudov (trampoline gymnastics), Turgut Gasanov (karate), Tarlan Gurbanaliev (chovgan), Ogtay Huseynov (swimming), Ali Nazarov (Greco-Roman wrestling), Humay Dadashova (taekwondo), Gyulyar Huseynova (boxing), and Konul Eyvazli (judo). The flag will be handed over to the CIS Executive Committee, which will determine the host country for the next Games.
After this, the national anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan was played.
The closing ceremony continued with an extensive artistic program. The audience enjoyed performances by the Natig rhythm group, People's Artist of Azerbaijan Aygun Kazimova, as well as renowned performers Aysel Teymurzade, Nigar Jamal, Eldar Gasimov, Chingiz Mustafayev, Nadir Rustamli, and other Azerbaijani pop stars. The evening concluded with a colorful fireworks display.
According to the final medal count, the Russian team took first place in the overall team standings, winning 231 medals (130 gold, 61 silver, and 40 bronze). Azerbaijan came in second, with 33 gold, 56 silver, and 95 bronze medals. Belarus placed third with 32 gold, 38 silver, and 52 bronze medals (a total of 122).
Athletes from 13 countries participated in the 3rd CIS Games. Representatives from ten countries won medals. The Tajikistan team finished seventh in the overall team standings, winning 22 medals: 1 gold, 5 silver, and 16 bronze.
The III CIS Games became a significant sporting event aimed at strengthening friendship and cooperation between the participating countries and developing mass sports in the Commonwealth.
