A working meeting of representatives of the State Unitary Enterprise "Tajikredmet" and the State Corporation "Rosatom" with the participation of relevant departments of Tajikistan was held in Khujand. The focus was on the rehabilitation of territories contaminated as a result of uranium mining and processing during the Soviet period, within the framework of the Intergovernmental Agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan, the press service of the CIS Executive Committee reports.
The Russian side shared Rosatom's long-term experience in the field of eliminating the consequences of nuclear legacy, including the successful implementation of similar projects in other CIS countries and beyond. Particular attention was paid to the environmental, technical and social aspects of the rehabilitation of uranium sites, including work on soil cleanup, monitoring radioactive background and restoring territories for safe use.
The discussion took place within the framework of the implementation of the Intergovernmental Agreement between the Republic of Tatarstan and the Russian Federation on cooperation in the field of radioactive waste management and rehabilitation of uranium legacy, signed earlier to ensure environmental safety and public health in the post-Soviet space.
Rosatom representatives confirmed their readiness to expand cooperation, proposed mechanisms for joint design, technology transfer, and training of national personnel. The parties also emphasized the importance of attracting international partners and donors, including the IAEA and EBRD, to finance environmental programs in the region.
