The Commissioner for Human Rights in the Republic of Tajikistan Umed Bobozoda published a statement on the official website of the Ombudsman in connection with the tragic incident in the Farkhor district, where, according to official information, a mother of many children Madina Khalimova jumped into the Surkhob River with four young children. As a result, three children died, the body of the fourth has not yet been found.
As noted in the statement, the Ombudsman expressed deep concern about what happened, calling the deaths of children “an alarming event” requiring immediate measures to protect the rights and interests of minors in the country.
“Analysis and study of such cases show that in most situations, the rights and interests of children are violated by the parents themselves or other close relatives – people whom children trust and love,” noted Umed Bobozoda.
He called on society, authorities and parents to actively participate in creating a safe and favorable environment for the younger generation.
The statement also stresses the need to:
-
strengthening explanatory and educational work among the population,
-
raising the level of legal awareness in matters of protection, education and development of children,
-
creation of effective mechanisms for public and institutional oversight of the observance of children's rights.
