The Pentagon has approved the transfer of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, CNN reports, citing American and European officials. According to sources, after assessing the situation, the US military concluded that supplying the missiles to Kyiv would not have a significant negative impact on the US stockpile.
The final decision will be made by President Donald Trump. According to CNN sources, he has not yet abandoned the idea of supplying Ukraine with missiles with a maximum range of 2,500 kilometers. The administration is already preparing plans for the rapid transfer of Tomahawk missiles to Kyiv if Trump gives the order.
While the Pentagon sees no problems with missile stockpiles, the US military still doesn't fully understand how the Ukrainians will train the necessary personnel and deploy the missiles, CNN sources told CNN. Several "operational challenges" must be resolved before Kyiv can use them effectively, the sources emphasized.
The United States began considering supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine in late September following a request from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who told Trump in a private conversation that this could force the Russian government to stop the war. On October 7, the American leader stated that he had "almost" decided to transfer the Tomahawks to Ukraine, but noted that before doing so, he planned to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin and discuss with Zelenskyy what Kyiv would do with the weapons.
Following a phone call with Putin, Trump stated that the United States is not yet ready to "deplete" its Tomahawk stockpiles. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov noted that Putin warned his American counterpart of the serious consequences for bilateral relations if the long-range weapons were transferred to the Ukrainian army.
At the same time, an anonymous White House official told CNN that Trump continues to view the transfer of missiles to Kiev as leverage against Moscow and does not intend to lift this threat against Putin "until it is no longer necessary."
