On May 26, Tajikistan's Minister of Transport, Azim Ibrohim, met with Lok Bahadur Thapa, President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The two discussed current issues of cooperation between Tajikistan and ECOSOC in the transport sector, according to the ministry's press service.
During the talks, an exchange of views took place on the development of the transport industry and strengthening cooperation in the development of modern, efficient, and safe transport networks. Particular attention was paid to the need for joint action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, as set out in the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Azim Ibrohim noted that for Tajikistan, as a developing landlocked country, transport connectivity is of strategic importance. He stated that the development of modern, sustainable, and efficient transport infrastructure is a key factor in ensuring economic growth, expanding trade and economic ties, and strengthening regional integration.
The head of the transport agency emphasized that the country's government is consistently implementing measures to modernize transport infrastructure, develop international transport corridors, and increase the republic's transit potential. At the same time, work is underway to implement digital solutions and modern mechanisms to simplify transport and logistics procedures.
The meeting also praised ECOSOC's role in supporting sustainable development in the transport sector, promoting international dialogue and mobilizing international cooperation in the interests of landlocked developing countries.
