Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) countries gathered in the French city of Evian for a three-day summit to discuss key international challenges, including Russia's war against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, competition with China, the development of artificial intelligence, and child safety online.
The summit comes amid the recent agreement between the United States and Iran, opening a 60-day period for further negotiations between the parties.
US President Donald Trump praised the agreements reached with Tehran. He said Washington and Iran have established good relations, and the Islamic Republic's leadership is currently pursuing a new approach to cooperation.
The American leader also commented on the situation around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important maritime routes through which approximately 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass.
Trump announced that the strait would be fully open to shipping by Friday. He added that most of the mines would be cleared by then, and that a significant number of safe routes had already been opened for shipping.
The US President also emphasized that passage through the strait will remain free and will not be subject to any additional fees. He also expressed the opinion that additional international support may not be required to ensure safe navigation.
One of Donald Trump's key announcements at the summit was that, following the achievement of a framework agreement with Iran, the US administration intends to refocus diplomatic efforts on resolving Russia's war against Ukraine.
According to the American president, Washington's attention to the Ukrainian issue has temporarily faded into the background due to the developing situation in the Middle East and the need to conduct negotiations with Iran.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that he had proposed to Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold a personal meeting at the G7 summit to discuss possible ways to end the war.
Speaking to journalists in Kyiv, Zelenskyy stated that the Ukrainian side had conveyed a corresponding signal to Moscow, hoping to use the presence of key international leaders at the summit to organize negotiations.
According to the Ukrainian president, Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, representatives of European states and the United States could have participated in the proposed meeting.
Zelensky emphasized that he considered this format a good opportunity to conduct a substantive dialogue on ending the war.
However, as the Ukrainian leader stated, the Russian side rejected this proposal.
According to Zelensky, European countries and the United States supported the idea of holding such negotiations, while Russia, in his opinion, once again demonstrated its unwillingness to engage in direct dialogue.
In addition to the Ukrainian issue and the situation in the Middle East, G7 summit participants intend to discuss a wide range of international topics, including combating unfair competition, developing new technologies, regulating artificial intelligence, protecting children in the digital space, and prospects for the further development of the global economy and international cooperation.
For French President Emmanuel Macron, the current G7 summit is his last as head of state, participating in such a format within the framework of his current presidential mandate.
