In May 2026, the Russian military launched a record number of Shahed drones into Ukrainian territory. According to the OSINT project "Oko Hora," over 8,150 drones were launched in the month, a 20% increase compared to April.
According to data based on daily reports from the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Ukrainian air defense forces have shot down nearly 7,500 drones. About 8% of the drones achieved their targets.
The previous peak was recorded in April, when approximately 6,500 drones were launched across Ukraine. In May, the average number of drone launches was approximately 260 per day.
At the same time, the intensity of Ukrainian strikes on targets in Russia has increased significantly, according to OSINT analyst John Felix's analysis, based on data from the Russian Ministry of Defense.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, 8,973 Ukrainian long-range drones were intercepted in May. This was the highest number ever recorded. The previous record was set in March, when Russia reported intercepting over 7,500 drones.
As noted in the publication, Ukrainian drone attacks in May led to a reduction in oil refining capacity in western and central Russia. The Ryazan and Moscow oil refineries temporarily suspended operations, causing supply disruptions in several regions.
In addition, in annexed Crimea and Sevastopol, the sale of gasoline using coupons was introduced on May 31 due to the resulting fuel shortage.
