US President Donald Trump announced the temporary suspension of Project Freedom, which provides escort services for ships in the Strait of Hormuz. He said the pause is necessary to assess the feasibility of finalizing and signing an agreement with Iran.
Trump noted that the decision was made in response to requests from Pakistan and several other countries, as well as in response to what he claimed was significant US military success in the campaign against Iran. He also noted the progress made in negotiations with the Iranian side.
The President announced that if the blockade remains in place, the project, which is already in full force, will be suspended for a short period to assess the prospects for completing negotiations and signing an agreement.
Trump previously stated that the United States would provide assistance to vessels blocked in the Strait of Hormuz and attempting to escape. He said this meant vessels from countries not involved in the conflict between Washington and Tehran.
He stressed that after leaving, such vessels will not return to the strait until the crisis is resolved.
According to the US President, this measure is of a humanitarian nature, since the crews of the blockaded ships are facing food shortages and other difficulties.
