The United States plans to carry out targeted strikes against senior Iranian officials and commanders whom Washington holds responsible for the deaths of demonstrators during protests in Iran, Middle East Eye reports, citing a source familiar with the matter.
According to the publication's source, the strikes could be carried out as early as this week, but the timing of the operation could be changed.
A former US intelligence official told Middle East Eye that discussions within the US presidential administration suggest Donald Trump has not abandoned his pursuit of "regime change" in Tehran.
Earlier, Donald Trump stated in an interview with Axios that Tehran was interested in a diplomatic resolution to its disputes with the United States. At the same time, the American leader emphasized that Washington had amassed significant forces near Iran. "We have a large armada near Iran. It's larger than the one near Venezuela," he noted.
Meanwhile, Axios, citing sources, reports that Trump has not yet made a final decision on strikes against Iran. The US president is scheduled to hold consultations on the matter this week.
