The Palestinian Hamas movement announced its readiness to release all living Israeli hostages and hand over the bodies of the dead in accordance with US President Donald Trump's plan, according to a statement from the movement, RIA Novosti reported.
"The Hamas movement declares its readiness to release all living hostages of the Israeli occupiers and (hand over) their bodies in accordance with the exchange formula proposed by Trump, provided the necessary conditions for the exchange are met on the ground. In this regard, Hamas confirms its readiness to immediately begin negotiations through intermediaries to discuss this in detail," the movement's press service noted.
At the same time, Hamas Deputy Politburo Chairman Musa Abu Marzouk emphasized that the release of hostages and the transfer of bodies within 72 hours is unrealistic under current conditions.
They also agreed to hand over control of the Gaza Strip.
"The movement reaffirms its agreement to transfer the governance of the Gaza Strip to a Palestinian committee composed of independent technocrats, based on a national Palestinian consensus and with the support of Arab and Islamic countries," Hamas said.
The movement also stated that other issues included in Trump's plan concern the future of the enclave and the inalienable rights of Palestinians, are linked to a comprehensive national position, and are based on international law. They emphasized that these issues are planned to be discussed within the framework of a pan-Palestinian structure, which will also include Hamas.
Abu Marzouk told Al Jazeera that the implementation of the points in Trump's plan requires detail and clarification.
"We will begin negotiations on all issues related to movement and weapons. <…> The implementation of the plan (Trump's – Ed.) is impossible without a negotiation process," he said.
The deputy head of the Politburo emphasized that the movement agreed to Trump's plan in principle, but specific points remain to be discussed. He stated that Hamas would hand over weapons to the "future Palestinian Authority."
According to Qatari television channel Al Arabi, citing sources, the movement released a response to Trump's proposal. In the document, Hamas praised the American leader's efforts and requested clarification on several points.
Trump's plan
On Monday, the White House released Trump's "comprehensive" 20-point plan to end the conflict in the Gaza Strip. It calls for an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages within 72 hours.
Hamas and "other groups" will have to agree not to participate in the governance of Gaza, either directly or indirectly. Amnesty is provided for members of the movement who agree to peaceful coexistence and surrender their weapons. However, Israel must not occupy or annex the semi-exclave.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported the plan, saying it was consistent with achieving military objectives. Five of them would be achieved: the return of hostages, securing the borders around the semi-exclave, demilitarizing Gaza, and governing the Strip without the participation of the Palestinian Authority or Hamas.
If the movement refuses to accept the plan, Netanyahu promised to "see it through to the end."
