The modernization of Hydroelectric Unit No. 7 was financed with the participation of international partners. A €34 million loan was secured for the project, along with 9.5 million somoni from the state budget. This arrangement enabled the modernization to be carried out using modern technologies and in accordance with international standards, improving the plant's operational efficiency.
Following the completion of the modernization, the hydroelectric unit's production capacity increased—it is now capable of generating up to 8 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per day.
It was noted that the modernization of the Nurek Hydroelectric Power Plant's equipment began in 2019, and three units have been completely replaced to date. A significant portion of the auxiliary equipment has also been upgraded. As a result, the plant's capacity has increased by 260 megawatts, exceeding the installed capacity of the Sangtuda-2 Hydroelectric Power Plant.
Currently, the modernization of the station’s fourth unit, along with its auxiliary equipment, is ongoing.
Overall, according to the project, all station units will be upgraded by 2032. Funding for these purposes is set at $750 million.
In addition, more than $1 billion is being allocated to modernize all existing power plants in Tajikistan, which will extend their service life by another 70–80 years.
