On April 24, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon made a working visit to cities and districts of the Khatlon region to inspect living conditions and inaugurate various facilities. This was reported by the presidential press service.
The President's working visit began in the city of Nurek.
During his visit, Emomali Rahmon commissioned hydroelectric unit No. 7 of the Nurek Hydroelectric Power Station.
As noted, construction and reconstruction work on this facility began in October 2024 and was completed on schedule and to a high standard. Andritz Hydro acted as the general contractor, and Tajik SGEM Open Joint-Stock Company performed the subcontracting work.

The project included a complete overhaul of the hydroelectric unit's primary equipment and the implementation of modern technologies that meet international requirements. This ensures reliable and efficient operation of the unit, significantly extending its service life.
The modernization of Hydroelectric Unit No. 7 was financed with the participation of international partners. A €34 million loan was secured for the project, along with 9.5 million somoni from the state budget. This arrangement enabled the modernization to be carried out using modern technologies and in accordance with international standards, improving the plant's operational efficiency.
Following the completion of the modernization, the hydroelectric unit's production capacity increased—it is now capable of generating up to 8 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per day.
It was noted that the modernization of the Nurek Hydroelectric Power Plant's equipment began in 2019, and three units have been completely replaced to date. A significant portion of the auxiliary equipment has also been upgraded. As a result, the plant's capacity has increased by 260 megawatts, exceeding the installed capacity of the Sangtuda-2 Hydroelectric Power Plant.

Currently, the modernization of the station’s fourth unit, along with its auxiliary equipment, is ongoing.
Overall, according to the project, all station units will be upgraded by 2032. Funding for these purposes is set at $750 million.
In addition, more than $1 billion is being allocated to modernize all existing power plants in Tajikistan, which will extend their service life by another 70–80 years.
During his tour, Emomali Rahmon praised the industry's employees and specialists, emphasizing their contribution to the country's energy sector development. He noted that the development of this sector remains a priority for state policy.
Responsible officials have also been instructed to pay special attention to the efficient use of new equipment, its high-quality maintenance, and the training of highly qualified personnel.
It is emphasized that the implementation of such projects will help strengthen Tajikistan's position as a country with extensive potential for green energy production and the development of the state's energy independence.
