China's maritime courts handled more than 6,800 foreign-related cases involving parties from 143 countries and regions from 2022 to 2024, demonstrating the country's growing role in resolving global maritime disputes, the Supreme People's Court said Thursday.
China's maritime judicial system was established in 1984. Over more than 40 years, it has handled approximately 88,000 cases involving foreign countries. Recently, foreign parties have increasingly turned to Chinese courts, even if their disputes do not directly relate to Chinese territory.
According to the Supreme People's Court, from 2022 to 2024, maritime courts across the country handled 1,226 cases related to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, and issued decisions on 1,134 of these cases.
During the same period, China's maritime courts handled a total of 98,726 maritime cases, including 185 criminal cases related to maritime shipping. A total of 193 criminal cases, also related to maritime shipping, were concluded.
The rise in international maritime disputes in Chinese courts reflects growing confidence among foreign companies and governments in China's maritime legal system, judicial officials say.
