At an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council on August 29, the United States called on Russia to move toward a peace agreement with Ukraine and warned of the possibility of new sanctions if hostilities continue, The Guardian reported.
The Security Council meeting focused on Russia's massive strikes on Kyiv, which took place on the night of August 27-28, using drones and missiles. According to Ukrainian authorities, the attack killed 22 people, including four children, and injured more than 50 others. Among the destroyed buildings were civilian infrastructure, the EU Delegation, and the British Council building.
US Minister-Counselor to the UN John Kelly stated that Russia's air strikes on the Ukrainian capital "raise doubts about Russia's seriousness in seeking peace." He called on Moscow to cease the attacks and emphasized the need for negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Kelly also echoed US President Donald Trump's warning about the possibility of new sanctions against Russia if the war continues. According to the diplomat, despite months of diplomatic efforts, Russia continues to ignore calls for a ceasefire.
According to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, on the night of August 28, the Russian army used 598 drones, including Shahed attack drones and drone simulators, as well as 31 missiles: 20 Kh-101 cruise missiles, nine Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles, and two Kinzhal missiles. The main target of the attack was the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, according to Timur Tkachenko, head of the city's military administration.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned Russia's massive attack and called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. Representatives of the European Union and individual European countries made similar statements. On August 28, Karen Malayan, Russia's acting Permanent Representative to the EU, was summoned to EU headquarters. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz noted on the social media platform X that "Russia has once again shown its true colors."
