The playful "Become Chinese" trend that started on social media has evolved into a fascinating cultural experience. It has become a unique way to better understand China during the Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year.
A CGTN survey of users worldwide found that 80.8% of respondents believe Chinese culture has moved from being a one-sided export to enjoying widespread international recognition. Many participants expressed a desire to "become Chinese" during the Spring Festival.
This year, the number of flight bookings to China more than quadrupled compared to last year. Significant growth was seen in bookings from Australia, Canada, and the UK, while the number of tourist trips from the Republic of Korea increased by 95% year-on-year. In European countries such as Spain, the Netherlands, and Italy, growth exceeded twofold. According to the survey, 86.7% of respondents expressed a desire to celebrate Chinese New Year in China.
Two years ago, the Spring Festival—the traditional Chinese New Year celebration—was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, becoming a common cultural heritage of the world. According to a survey, 95% of respondents believe this recognition by UNESCO demonstrates the growing acceptance and recognition of Chinese culture worldwide.
Many foreigners who have visited China and previously perceived the country as mysterious now describe it as truly fascinating. A survey found that 92.1% of respondents believe that the combination of China's deep, centuries-old traditional culture with modern, trendy elements creates a relatable and accessible cultural experience. Furthermore, 76.3% believe that the "Becoming Chinese" trend reflects China's openness not only in its market and policy but also in its integration of lifestyles and cultural concepts.
The survey results were published on CGTN's English, Spanish, French, Arabic, and Russian platforms, where 5,154 participants from around the world expressed their opinions within 24 hours.
