Venezuela has asked the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting in response to US actions, The New York Times reports.
A letter from the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, obtained by the publication, states that the US president "is violating Venezuela's national sovereignty with impunity and in full view of the world," as well as "the country's territorial integrity and political independence."
Caracas accuses Washington of violating international law and the UN Charter, noting that US behavior "brings chaos and destruction to international relations." Venezuela also asked the Security Council to condemn in writing US actions against Venezuelan vessels and foreign trade.
In response to US threats, the Venezuelan government ordered the navy to escort ships carrying petroleum products. According to the publication's sources, several vessels departed under naval escort between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.
Commenting on the situation, an American official told the publication that Washington is aware of the introduction of a military escort and is considering various options for action in this regard.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced a blockade of all sanctioned tankers traveling to and from Venezuela. He wrote on the social media platform TruthSocial: "I am ordering a complete blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers traveling to and from Venezuela." Trump also designated the current Venezuelan government as a foreign terrorist organization.
