The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEP) adopted a resolution "On the Preservation of Glaciers and the Cryosphere," co-sponsored by the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Peru. The decision was made following the Assembly's seventh session, held at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
The resolution calls on all United Nations Member States and international partners to intensify efforts to urgently conserve glaciers, combat climate change, enhance international cooperation and strengthen resilience, and attract financial resources to implement these initiatives.

The document officially welcomes the holding of the International High-Level Conference on Glaciers, held in Dushanbe in May 2025, and also notes the Dushanbe Declaration on Glaciers and the Dushanbe Appeal for Glacier Conservation.
The adoption of the resolution by acclamation reaffirms Tajikistan's important role in advancing the global water and climate agenda, including glacier conservation. This resolution is the first and, so far, only one in the history of the UN Environment Assembly sponsored by a Central Asian country.
The UN Environment Assembly is recognized as the highest international decision-making body on environmental issues.
