Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov signed a decree "On holding commemorative events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Chyngyz Aitmatov's birth," declaring 2028 the Year of the great writer Chyngyz Aitmatov, the CIS Executive Committee press service reported.
The Cabinet of Ministers has been instructed to establish an organizing committee by the end of this year, comprising government agencies, the scientific community, creative unions, civil society representatives, foreign figures, and international organizations. A detailed plan of events dedicated to Aitmatov's 100th anniversary is planned to be approved by the end of the first quarter of 2026.
According to the document, the action plan will include the following initiatives:
– renaming the memorial museum complex "Chingiz-Ordo" in the village of Sheker to "Aitmatov's Universe" ("Aitmatov aalamy") and completing the construction of the complex;
– modernization of the infrastructure of the center and museum in accordance with international standards of cultural tourism;
– organization of international exhibitions, conferences and cultural events abroad;
– promoting the initiative to celebrate Aitmatov’s anniversary within the framework of UNESCO and other international organizations;
– establishment of the International Chyngyz Aitmatov Prize for outstanding achievements in the fields of literature, philosophy, diplomacy and humanism;
– publication of an academic collection of the writer’s works in the state, official and other languages;
– creation of feature and documentary films about the life and work of Aitmatov;
– holding cultural and educational events, naming streets, schools, libraries and other objects after the writer;
– issue of a collectible gold coin “100th Anniversary of Chyngyz Aitmatov” with a denomination of 100 soms from the “Historical Events” series.
All events will be financed from the national budget, as well as from extra-budgetary and international sources.
Oversight of the decree's implementation is entrusted to the Office for Oversight of the Implementation of Presidential Decisions and the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan. The decree comes into force on the day of its official publication.
The celebration of Chyngyz Aitmatov's 100th anniversary involves large-scale public engagement, as well as cultural and educational institutions across the country and abroad, aimed at preserving and promoting the legacy of one of Kyrgyzstan's greatest writers.
