The opening ceremony of the 3rd CIS Games took place in Ganja, Azerbaijan. The competition will run until October 8. A total of 1,624 athletes from 13 countries will participate, according to the CIS Executive Committee press service.
The participating teams will be represented by athletes from: Azerbaijan – 340, Russia – 262, Uzbekistan – 254, Belarus – 240, Kazakhstan – 147, Tajikistan – 144, Kyrgyzstan – 126, Turkmenistan – 48, Turkey – 38, Cuba – 11, Kuwait – 6, Pakistan – 4 and Oman – 4.
Competitions will be held in 23 sports: table tennis, archery, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, chovgan, fencing, football, rhythmic gymnastics, rowing, sambo, target shooting, clay pigeon shooting, swimming, taekwondo, trampoline jumping, volleyball, Greco-Roman wrestling, judo, karate, women's wrestling, and freestyle wrestling.
The Games will be held in seven Azerbaijani cities. Twelve sports venues have been allocated for the competition.
The goal of the Games is to strengthen friendly relations between the peoples of the Commonwealth countries.
