In 2024, an eight-year-old boy in Russia's Novosibirsk region was diagnosed with alcoholism, the regional Ministry of Health reported, citing chief child psychiatrist and narcologist Nina Koshlyak.
According to the doctor, the child's drinking habit was noticed by prevention authorities, after which he was referred for inpatient treatment. The boy is currently undergoing individual psychotherapy and has completely abstained from alcohol.
"Teenagers don't have the skill to say no confidently. When everyone in society drinks alcohol, they agree to join in," Koshlyak noted. She also emphasized that alcohol addiction in children can develop in just two to three years.
The agency reiterated that early detection of such cases and timely intervention are key measures in preventing alcohol addiction among minors. Experts urge parents and teachers to closely monitor their children's behavior and promptly seek medical attention.
