The State Unitary Enterprise Tajik Railways has begun preliminary work on the electrification of the Vahdat-Pakhtaobod railway line. This was announced by Tajikistan's Minister of Transport, Azim Ibrohim, at a press conference in Dushanbe.
According to him, the transition to electric traction will reduce the company's operating costs, improve resource efficiency, and create more comfortable transportation conditions.
The railway line connects the city of Vakhdat, located 20 km east of Dushanbe, with the Tajik capital and then to Uzbekistan's railways via the urban-type settlement of Pakhtaobod on the Tajik-Uzbek border. The length of the Dushanbe–Pakhtaobod route is 62 km.
The section is served by a commuter train that runs daily between Dushanbe-I station and Pakhtaobod, making 15 stops. Travel time is approximately one hour, making this route popular among residents of the capital and its suburbs.
Ibrokhim also reported that the possibility of electrifying the Kanibadam-Bekabad section (a city in Uzbekistan located on the western border of Tajikistan’s Sughd region) is being considered in the future.
