Archaeologists from Tajikistan have discovered a unique site in the city of Istaravshan—an ancient sewer system dating back to the 7th century AD. This was reported by architect and excavation participant Khomid Aminjonov.
According to him, the discovery was made in 2023 in collaboration with Rakhim Nabiyev, a doctor of historical sciences and professor from Khujand, in the Kalai-Mug region. According to preliminary estimates by experts, the sewer system is approximately 1,300 years old, but even older cultural layers may be hidden beneath it.
"According to geologists, layers of earth dating back to the first century AD and even five thousand years ago may be located beneath the discovered structure," noted Khomid Aminjonov.
In addition to the sewer system, archaeologists discovered a number of jugs dating back to the 3rd, 6th, and earlier centuries. Of particular interest was a 6th-century jug made of concrete and lined with clay. According to the researchers, the design and state of preservation of some of the items are strikingly unique.
Experts believe the discovery confirms the high level of development of engineering and construction thought in the territory of modern Tajikistan during early historical periods and opens up new perspectives for studying the region's history.
