Marcos Thomas Perez, who worked as a security guard for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association, has appeared in court for stealing players' jerseys, Tengri Sport reports.
According to Marca, a 62-year-old Miami resident has been charged with stealing team property and reselling it online.
A search of the defendant's home revealed approximately 300 T-shirts and other valuables, and the basketball club's management confirmed their theft from the sports complex, which belongs to the Miami Heat.
"The indictment alleges that Perez sold the goods to intermediaries online. Authorities allege that 'over the course of at least three years, the defendant sold more than 100 stolen items worth approximately $2 million and shipped them across state lines,' often at very low prices to quickly dispose of the goods," the publication reports.
It's worth noting that some of the stolen items included real treasures. For example, a security guard managed to snag a jersey belonging to the team's most famous player, LeBron James, and sold it for $100,000. It was later sold at an official auction for $3.7 million.
It was also clarified that Marcos Thomas Perez was one of the few club employees who had access to a secure room where memorabilia of the Miami Heat star was kept.
The shirts, balls and other items were intended to end up in the club museum.
