US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of 25% tariffs on goods from India from August 1, 2025, due to the trade imbalance and New Delhi's ongoing commercial ties with Russia. He announced this on his own platform Truth Social on Wednesday.
Trump noted that despite friendly relations with India, trade with the country was limited by high tariffs, which he described as “among the most stringent and opaque in the world.” He said the United States faces a “massive trade deficit” with India.
The US President stressed that India continues to buy the vast majority of its military equipment from Russia and is one of the largest buyers of Russian energy resources along with China, while the international community insists on Russia ending its military actions in Ukraine.
“Starting August 1, India will pay a 25% tariff plus an additional penalty,” Trump said, without specifying the amount or specifics of the additional fee.
Earlier, on April 2, 2025, the United States had already introduced duties of 26% on goods from India as part of the general trade policy, and on July 14, Donald Trump announced the possibility of introducing secondary duties of 100% against Russia's trading partners if an agreement on peace in Ukraine was not reached within 50 days. On July 29, he reduced this period to 10 days, that is, until August 8.
According to media reports, India reached its highest level of purchases of Russian crude oil in two years in June 2025 — about 35% of its total imports — despite US sanctions aimed at curbing Russian oil supplies. New Delhi is also a major buyer of Russian weapons, including fighter jets, missile systems, and submarines worth about $80 billion.
India and Russia have close political and economic ties, although India has refused to join Western sanctions against Moscow over its military operation in Ukraine.
At the same time, Trump expressed hope for a speedy end to military action and announced the introduction of new tariff measures in the event of no progress in peace talks.
