The Chairman of the Sughd Region, Rajabboy Akhmadzoda, visited the Kairakkum Hydroelectric Power Station (HPP), where he got acquainted with the progress of the large-scale project to modernize it and install modern equipment. This was reported by the press service of the regional administration.
The Kairakkum hydroelectric power station, commissioned in 1957, is one of the key objects of Tajikistan's energy infrastructure. The station consists of six hydroelectric units, but over 68 years of operation, the main equipment has significantly worn out, as a result of which the capacity of the units has decreased from the design 21 MW to 12 MW.
Modernization work began in 2019 with the support of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon. Over the past five years, three hydroelectric units have been completely updated – No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, while the capacity of each of them has been increased from 19 to 29 megawatts.
The project included the installation of new equipment, including turbine control systems, excitation system transformers, machine room equipment and control and monitoring devices. The equipment was supplied by leading European engineering companies. The outdated 220/110 kV open switchgear was also replaced with a modern closed gas-insulated switchgear, which increased the level of safety and reliability of power transmission.
Both domestic specialists and international partners are involved in the modernization. The regional chairman gave a high assessment of the progress of the project, instructing the responsible structures to ensure the proper quality of work and the rational use of new technologies.
