Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said a possible Chinese attack on Taiwan poses an existential threat to Japan, prompting a sharp reaction from Beijing.
China said that six months after the Japanese prime minister's remarks, they still remain a major irritant in Sino-Japanese relations.
Beijing emphasized that genuine dialogue between the countries must be built on mutual respect and adherence to previous commitments. The Chinese side believes that, to improve bilateral relations and restore people-to-people exchanges, Japan must demonstrate a serious approach to this issue and take concrete steps to correct mistakes.
The statement also said Tokyo must repair the damage Beijing believes has been done to the political foundation of China-Japan relations.
Following Sanae Takaichi's statements, China has increased pressure on Japan through diplomatic, economic and propaganda mechanisms.
