More than six thousand applicants from Tajikistan have been accepted to study at Russian universities in 2025. This was announced by Tajikistan's Minister of Education and Science, Rahim Saidzoda, at a press conference for journalists.
"In the 2025-2026 academic year, a total of 6,665 applicants from Tajikistan enrolled abroad, including 551 to countries other than Russia, while over 6,000 were admitted to universities in the Russian Federation," the minister noted. He clarified that Tajik citizens were given the opportunity to study at Russian universities both in state-funded places under the Russian government's quota and on a general basis.
Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Tajikistan Lutfiya Abdulkholiqzoda reported that in 2025, over 600 students who had previously studied in Russia but were deported or denied entry to the country continued their education at higher education institutions in their home countries.
Russian education has traditionally been popular among Tajik students. The Russian government allocates 1,000 quotas annually for study at Russian universities to the Republic of Tajikistan. In October 2025, Russian Ambassador to Dushanbe Semyon Grigoryev reported that of the 43,000 Tajik students studying abroad, over 30,000 are studying in Russia.
The republic itself is home to the Russian-Tajik (Slavic) University (RTSU) and branches of Lomonosov Moscow State University, the National University of Science and Technology MISIS, and the National Research University MPEI. RTSU has over 6,000 students, while the branches of these three Russian universities have over 8,000 students.
Furthermore, some schools in Tajikistan conduct instruction entirely in Russian. In educational institutions where instruction is in Tajik, Russian is mandatory. With Russia's support, five schools were built in 2022 where instruction is conducted in Russian and according to Russian standards.
