The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) continues to support the transition from traditional carbon-intensive transport models to clean and sustainable mobility in Tajikistan by providing financing for a large-scale public transport upgrade in Bokhtar, the capital of Khatlon Region, according to the Bank's press service.
The EBRD's project financing consists of a €6.4 million loan and a €3.6 million investment grant from the Bank. The project is also supported by technical assistance funds totaling over €600,000.

The funds will enable the municipal enterprise, State Unitary Enterprise "Bokhtarnakliyotkhizmatrason," to purchase 50 modern electric buses equipped for people with disabilities and to create the necessary charging infrastructure.
The project supports the Electric Transport Development Program in the Republic of Tajikistan for 2023–2028 and the Green Economy Development Strategy for 2023–2037. The introduction of electric buses on routes will reduce carbon dioxide emissions, improve air quality in the city, create new jobs, and implement a training program for electric bus operation personnel.
Cooperation between the EBRD and the city of Bokhtar in the transport sector has been ongoing since 2018. As part of the previous project, a bus depot was built and 41 low-floor buses were purchased.
The new program aims to provide residents of Bokhtar and nearby settlements with modern and environmentally friendly transportation, which will be an important step in implementing the state's sustainable development policy.
