Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, during which the parties discussed the results of the Ukrainian leader's recent talks with US President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. This was reported on December 29 by the Ukrainian president's office.
According to the official statement, Zelenskyy briefed the German Chancellor on the main agreements and key points reached during his talks with the American president. These included security guarantees for Ukraine, further international cooperation, and coordination with European partners.
The Ukrainian president thanked Friedrich Merz for his advice and ongoing political coordination, emphasizing the importance of close dialogue between Kyiv and Berlin as they discuss future steps to resolve the conflict.
Discussion of Russia's claims regarding the attack on Putin's residence. A separate topic of discussion was the Russian authorities' claims of Ukraine's alleged involvement in the drone attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin's state residence. Zelenskyy's office dismissed these allegations as disinformation.
"Along with Chancellor Merz, we discussed the latest Russian fake news about Ukraine's alleged involvement in the attacks on the Russian ruler's residence," the Ukrainian presidential press service said in a statement.
According to Zelenskyy, Kyiv is doing everything possible to achieve peace and end the fighting. He emphasized that Russia, instead of spreading such statements, should focus on taking real steps to restore security.
"Ukraine has presented all its proposals for a peaceful settlement. Russia needs to stop inventing new ways to wage war and start thinking about how to restore security," Zelenskyy noted.
Contacts with US Representatives and European Advisors: Several hours before his conversation with the German Chancellor, Zelenskyy also held a phone call with US Special Presidential Envoy Steven Witkoff. This was announced by Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Rustem Umerov on his page on the social media platform X.
According to him, the key topic of the conversation was coordinating further contacts and agreeing on next steps. "The work is intensive and substantive: we continue consultations and are reviewing document clauses almost daily," Umerov wrote.
He also noted that Ukraine is in constant contact with European national security advisers and that agreements have already been reached to hold further meetings in the near future.
Putin and Trump's phone conversation
Amid Kyiv's active diplomatic contacts, the White House also reported a telephone conversation between Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump on December 29. Washington characterized the conversation as "positive."
Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov stated that Donald Trump expressed "shock" and "outrage" during the conversation over reports of a drone attack on the Russian president's residence. According to Ushakov, Trump also noted that the United States, "thank God," did not transfer Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine.
At the time of publication, the American side had not officially commented on the statements made by the Russian side following the telephone conversation.
